Enfield flying sites

Note: This map only shows the position of Enfield town within the UK.

ENFIELD see also BRAMLEY’S FARM

ENFIELD or ENFIELD CHASE see also ROYAL CHACE HOTEL

ENFIELD: Military Landing Ground

NOTES: Little known but enough evidence to suggest there was a RFC Home Defence Night Landing Ground in/near Enfield in 1915?

ENFIELD: Temporary aerodrome

NOTES: Colin Cruddas has muddied the waters because a picture on page 24 in his lovely book ‘Those Fabulous Flying Years’ of a “Berkshire” Avro 504, (probably a 504K?), “bombarding a bridal couple with flour” is reported to have been taken on the 19th April 1931 at the Enfield Air Carnival. Elsewhere he clearly states that, in April 1929 Berkshire Aviation Tours were taken over by Northern Air Transport. Typically when looking for proof of so many flying sites the details don’t agree, but am I justified in thinking the Enfield Air Carnival did in fact take place? Does anybody know about this?

Did it occur on the 19th April 1931 and if so, what was the location? Perhaps from the fabled WW1 RFC Home Defence Night Landing Ground listed above?

I heard of an airfield just to the north of, and parallel to Bramley Road, Cockfosters. There used to be a Range Rover garage on Cockfosters Road which I was told used to be used for spitfire repairs in WW2. It may have just been a field which was used for this purpose rather than an RAF base. I thought that you might be interested. I have no evidence or proof of this, so it would need some research. Best wishes Tom
