ENGLISH CHANNEL: Reports of balloon flight

Location: About 8nm off the Eddystone Lighthouse

NOTES: It seems that during the siege of Paris in November 1870 the balloon ‘Jacqard’ was launched by the seaman 'Prince' from the Gare d’Orleans on the night of the 28/29th. Later, (presumably towards dawn?), it was sighted by Cornish fisherman who reported being showered by sand as the occupants dumped ballast.

Later quantities of letters were found washed up, bearing the imprint ‘Balloon Poste’ but nothing more was heard or seen of the balloon or its occupants.
