Esha Ness

ESHA NESS: Temporary landing site

Location: Esha Ness lighthouse is on the north-western part of the Mainland

NOTES: In his excellent book Air Ambulance Iain Hutchinson tells this tale; “Regular flights to Shetland began in 1936 and the most famous ambulance flight performed by Gandar Dower’s airline, then operating as Allied Airways, occurred on 30th April 1937 when Henry Vallance was charged with the task of uplifting the keeper of the Esha Ness lighthouse from the front door of his lonely outpost in a remote corner of the Shetland mainland.”
