Eton

Note: This map only shows my rough estimation of where Astley landed. If anybody can kindly provide a more exact location, this advice will be most welcome.

ETON: Temporary visit

Location: Eton School playing fields

NOTES: In his book British Built Aircraft Vol.3 Ron Smith tells of the pioneer pilot H J D Astley, an Old Etonian, being the first Old Boy to land on the playing fields. Probably in 1910 or 1911?

Which obviously suggests others may have landed here at later dates?

Please see my listing for BALMORAL (COUNTY ANTRIM) which has a photograph taken, on the 21st September 1912, almost certainly a second or two before Astley had a fatal crash flying his Blériot during a flying display.
