Operated by:  John C W Fitzroy, 9th Duke of Grafton

Location:  E of the A1088, about 3nm SE of Thetford town centre

Period of operation: Perhaps a few days in 1936?

NOTES:  We have Mr Graham Frost, a great friend of this 'Guide' to thank for pointing out this location. It has been the aim of this 'Guide' to provide as wide a picture of the incredibly rich and diverse history of British flying sites as possible. This being a very good example, especially as it poses several questions that may never be answered - unless you know otherwise?

The de Havilland DH.80A Puss Moth, G-AAFA, was registered at this address, to John C W Fitzroy, the 9th Duke of Grafton, on the 28th July 1936. Just over a week later he was killed, aged twenty two, on the 5th August when his Bugatti crashed during the Limerick Grand Prix, Ireland, held in the town centre. So, we do not know if he actually flew G-AAFA from here? It seems likely, but only once or twice?

In October 1936 G-AAFA was sold to Sweden as SE-AFH and based at Bromma airport, Stockholm. It has now been restored and flew again in the summer of 2017. On a personal note I have flown from Bromma, several times in June 1993 and lastly on a photo shoot over Stockholm in August 2008. Did not get to see SE-AFH though.
