EXETER: Balloon ascent venue
Operated by: Mr George Graham
Location: ?
Period of operation: Possibly August 1824?
NOTES: It seems George Graham made his first balloon ascent in London in August 1823. His ascent from Exeter in 1824 is said to have been his twelth ascent. On this occasion he is reported to have landed near Bridgewater. Mr Graham eventually gave up this pursuit, ‘handing over the reigns’ of their business to his wife who went on for thirty years in this perilous business surviving unscathed despite many adventures
EXETER: Temporary Landing Ground
NOTES: In early June 1912 Henri Salmet landed his Blériot monoplane on his ‘Daily Mail’ sponsored ‘Tour' at TOPSHAM BARACKS in Exeter. (See seperate listing).
EXETER: Temporary aerodrome?
NOTES: On the 13th May 1933, (some say 12th April 1933 as well?), Sir Alan Cobham’s No.2 Tour displayed in/near Exeter and returned later that year to display again on the 29th August, presumably at the same location? Is the venue used still known? On the 8th August Cobham’s 1934 Tour visited Exeter, using the same site?
