Fakenham flying sites
Note: This map only shows the location of Fakenham town within the UK.
FAKENHAM: Company helicopter landing area
Operated by: Pest Control Ltd
Location: Greenway Lane, Fakenham
Period of operation: Early 1950s (Only?)
NOTES: During the early 1950s Pest Control Ltd operated crop-spraying Hiller 12Es from their depot.
FAKENHAM: Temporary helicopter landing site
Operated by: F.M.C. Corp
Location: Playing Field
Period of operation: 1979 & 1980s only?
NOTES: It is reported that during these two years FMC chartered a helicopter, (the Bell Jetranger G-BBUY in 1979), during the pea-vining season which was usually the second week of July to the second week in August. The helicopter was based here all week but usually flew off for the weekends. It seems the weather was so bad during the summer of 1980, the helicopter was barely used - andprobably the reason F.M.C. gave up on the idea?
FAKENHAM: Temporary helicopter landing area(s?)
Operated by: The RAF and RN
Location: School playing fields in Fakenham
Period of operation: Possibly 1970s & early 1980s only?
NOTES: It is reported that from time to time RAF Westland Whirlwinds and Royal Navy Westland Wessex helicopters, (presumably one at a time?), would land on the school playing fields in Fakenham to give demonstrations to the pupils. Perhaps whilst deployed on exercises at the nearby Stanford Battle Area?
FAKENHAM: Temporary helipad
Operated by: Army Air Corps
Location: Fakenham Community Centre
Notes: It is reported that an Army Gazelle landed at the Community Centre in 1976 as part of a recruiting drive, but apparently the crew landed first in a sports field next to the Police Station to ask directions!
FAKENHAM RACECOURSE: Private helicopter landing area
Location: About 1nm SE of Fakenham town centre
Landing area: 1998: Inside racecourse, close to, but not immediately next to stream
