Felpham
FELPHAM: Temporary experimental flying site
Operated by: Mr Long and Mr Cobb
Location: On the beach at the north east end of Limmer Lane in Felpham. Just W of Middleton-on-Sea and roughly 1.5nm ENE of Bognor Regis town centre
Period of operation: Late 1910
Note: The newspaper article was published in the Bognor Regis Observer on the 12th October 1910. The local and local area views are from my Google Earth © derived database.
NOTES: We have Mr Mike Holder, a great friend of this 'Guide', for discovering this account. Did this machine actually fly? Seems likely it did? Although the French were well advanced in producing, for that time, very capable aeroplanes, those in the U.K. were struggling to catch up. Most of the history commonly available tends to heavily rely on the most famous names, some of whom later became 'household' names as major manufacturers.
But, as this example illustrates, many others were also trying their best to develop successful designs. You can find many examples of this within this 'Guide', and I expect, others are yet to be discovered?
