Operated by: 1980s: Felthorpe Flying Club
2000: Felthorpe Flying Group

Location: 1nm N of 1067, 4nm NNW of NORWICH airport (HORSHAM St FAITH)

Period of operation: 1964 to present day

Runways: 1990: 16/34   457x37   grass           05/23   457x37   grass

2000: 16/34   436x28   grass           05/23   487x26   grass

Note: It would appear that at some time before 2003 and after 2006 another runway existed:  03/21   700   grass

NOTES: The Felthorpe Flying Group were formed here in the early 1960s having moved from Cley-next-the-Sea where they were called the North Norfolk Flying Group. According to their web-site (2014) this was on BECK FARM in 1958. They moved to FELTHORPE in 1964.

1977
In 1977 the following aircraft could be seen at FELTHORPE: Miles M.14A Hawk Trainer 3 G-AIUA, Beagle A.109 Airedale G-ARNP, Cessna 150E G-ASZB, Tipsy T.66-2 Nipper G-ATKZ, Piper PA-18 Super Cub G-AXGA of the Felthorpe Flying Group and DHC.1 Chipmunk G-BBMP.

AN ARSON ATTACK
In February 2003 an arson attack destroyed nine aircraft including a DHC.1 Chipmunk (G-DHCI), the ARV Super 2 (G-COWS) and a rare Fairchild 24R.

NEW ADDITIONS
A February issue of Light Aviation magazine (year?) contained the information that another Chipmunk (G-BXDG) was joining the Felthorpe Flying Group and that a Fokker DR1 (G-DREI) *was soon expected. These to join the other classic types already based there, namely: DH.82a Tiger Moth (G-ANFL, DH.87B Hornet Moth (G-ADMT), Auster J1N (G-AIBR) and the Beagle Terrier (G-ASCH).

*The November 2018 issue of Light Aviation magazine contained a three page article about this ten year build project.

Another article in the May 2016 edition of Light Aviation, by David Reid, leads me to believe that his fabulous Chilton Monoplane G-JUJU (Black Magic) which first flew in 2016, will be joining his Hornet Moth here. (Presumably G-ADMT?)

I recall the fire-incident and very sad. I have just uncovered a photographic-slide of the Tipsey Trainer G-AFWT which I took at Elstree Aerodrome on 4-6-1966 which was with the Felthorpe Flying Group at the time. Good to know that it is (or was) still airworthy until recently (2018) at Old Warden and that is in safe & good care there - at 79 years of age. If yourselves would like an digitilised-copy of that slide (sent by email) then please advise ? Regards Terry.

Reply from Dick Flute:
