Ferry Hinksey Road

FERRY HINKSEY ROAD: Temporary flying site

Period of operation: Briefly in 1927

Location: Probably in the area occupied today by the Oatlands Road Recreational Ground, S of the A420 Botley Road, WSW of Oxford city centre. In the 1920s it is quite possible that the residential area separating the Oatlands Road Recreational Ground and the Botley Road did not exist? This said, even today the Oatlands Road Recreational Ground, adjacent to Ferry Hinkley Road, would have been quite large enough for use by an Avro 504 for example.

NOTES: It is recorded that in 1927 a ‘joy-ride’ operation, (possibly just a single pilot with an Avro 504?) arrived here and was a great success attracting undergraduates. To such an extent that the universities ‘management’ stopped it. Even so it appears the universities did recognise this enthusiasm for aviation and shortly after, with the co-operation of the RAF, the Oxford University Air Squadron was formed. The flying opportunities being initially arranged at UPPER HEYFORD.
