FINDO GASK: Military aerodrome and Satellite Landing Ground

Aerial view in 2018

Note: This picture was obtained from Google Earth ©

It might seem astonishing, but even in 2018 the layout of the airfield is still clearly visible. I suppose having a map of the WW2 airfield helps, such a I have, but basically it was a blunt 'L' shape, on its side, with the 'toe' pointing northwards.

Military users: WW2: RAF Flying Training Command

309 (Polish) Sqdn    (Westland Lysanders later North American P-51 Mustangs)

25 SLG

Location: NW of Mayfield, 7nm W of Perth

Period of operation: 1941 to 1948

Runways: WW2: Steel matting:   01/19   1006    grass            07/25   1783   grass
                                                  11/29   1143   grass

NOTES: It appears that 25 SLG was administered by 44 Maintenance Unit from EDZELL (later at RAF KINNELL) in the early days and used FINDO GASK as storage for light non-operational aircraft like Percival Proctors as well as 24 SLG at RAF METHVEN (see METHVEN CASTLE).
