Military users: RAF Flying Training Command         21 Group

25 EFTS  [Elementary Flying Training School]   (DH.82A Tiger Moths)
Note:  RLG  (Relief Landing Ground) for 25 EFTS based at HUCKNALL

613 Sqdn   (Westland Lysanders)

ARMY AIR CORPS

654 Sqdn  (Taylorcraft Plus C2)
Note: Based here only from 15th September to 20th November 1942

659 Sqdn   (Auster III)
Note: Formed here 30th April 1943 and stayed until 17th August that year

ROYAL AIR FORCE

No.28 Gliding School   (Slingsby Cadets)
Note: Started here in October 1944 and presumably stayed until the aerodrome closed in February 1948?

Location: Just W of Firbeck Hall, N of the B6463 and S of the A634. Just W to NW of Firbeck village, 6nm NNW of Worksop

Period of operation: 1940 to 1948

Runways:  E/W   777    grass         Otherwise 90 to 100 acres ‘all-over’ grass airfield?

NOTES: In late 2009 I discovered an entry in the Flight magazine archive showing that in 1936 the FIRBECK COUNTRY CLUB aerodrome was under construction near Sheffield and planned to occupy 50 acres. Clearly incorrect, as it was being used in 1935 by, for example, no less than the Prince of Wales.

This then became the WW2 airfield.
