Fish Meadow

FISH MEADOW: Model flying site

Location: In Fish Meadow just W of Upton-on-Severn which is roughly 5nm SE of Great Malvern

NOTES: As said elsewhere in this 'Guide' the importance of 'models' has had, and still has, a major contribution to the development of aviation, especially in research. However, the 'aspect' of models encompasses a very large range of diversity. Ranging from usually plastic small versions for usually 'home' display purposes, and museums etc,  to highly sophisticated flying versions.

My attention to the larger aspect of flying models came about when a model glider collided with the Pioneer 300 (G-OPFA) on the 5th April 2015. This was the subject of an AAIB report EW/G2015/04/12.

What caught my attention was an aspect of this report which stated: "The sport of model flying in the UK is governed by the 'British Model Flying Association' (BMFA). There are around 850 affiliated clubs in the UK. Additionally, there are a number that are not affiliated, with a significant amount ot activity that takes place away from clubs in areas such as public open spaces, private fields, and mountain and slope sites."

I knew that model flying was popular in the UK but had no idea the 'sport' existed on this scale.
