Fishtoft

FISHTOFT: Temporary landing site

Location: In/near Fishtoft village, about 2nm SE of Boston

NOTES: Early in the morning of the 1st November 1908 the balloon “Mammoth”, flown by the aeronaut A E Gaudron and crewed by C C Turner and Capt E M Maitland, alighted here after giving up on a World record distance attempt to Russia, the expected westerly winds failing to arrive. The previous year they’d got to Sweden, landing some distance beyond Gothenburg. They had taken off from CRYSTAL PALACE (LONDON) and you can find more details in that listing.

But - they did make it to Russia shortly after!
