Foreland

Note: I owe a debt to Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust for providing this location.

FORELAND: Military Marine Operations Station
(Also known as BEMBRIDGE, NEW BEMBRIDGE, BEMBRIDGE POINT)

Military user: RAF

551 & 512 [Special Duty Flights]    (Airco DH6)

Location: The Foreland is the easternmost point of the Isle of Wight now covered in housing making up the town of Bembridge

Period of operation: 1918 to 1919

Landing area: 51 acres     549x457   grass

NOTES: It certainly surprised me to discover, for example, that many purpose built aerodromes built for the Americans to use in WW2 were often only occupied for a year or so. But conspicuous waste at every level is the hallmark of nearly all military enterprise of course.

Even so this airfield site takes some beating by even the most profligate of military standards. Opened in August 1918 it was closed in January 1919! Others say September 1919.
