Note: The first picture from a postcard was kindly sent by Mike Charlton who has an amazing collection. See,  www.aviationpostcard.co.uk

I certainly did not expect to find a picture of FOULA for this 'Guide' so this is a real treat. I wonder if anybody can kindly put a date on it?

The second picture (2008) was obtained from Google Earth ©

Airline users: 2001: Loganair

2016: Directflight

Note: Both using, it appears, Britten-Norman Islanders

Location: Near Hametown, extreme SE end of island

Period of operation: 1980s to 2001 only?

Runway: 18/36   457x18   hard   (gravel)

NOTES: In 2001 Loganair it seems that they were operating seven services a week here. But, with no ‘off runway’ parking available, any visiting aircraft using the strip blocks the runway!

Mind you, with a runway surface like this, and its short length, I very much doubt if many other visitors arrive?

During my Shetlands detachment in 1972, I landed on Foula in a Loganair Islander and it was well used then. The surface then was part gravel, part rutted mud and part unprepared ie uncut heather, nothing like as 'good' as it is now!! Can't make out the reg of the Islander in the photo but I think the colour scheme is later than the ones I flew in which were GAVRA (Foula) and GAXKB (Lerwick - Unst - Fetlar - Whalsay) The runway surface in the photo is slightly better than when I landed there!!

We'd love to hear from you, so please scroll down to leave a comment!
