Frome
FROME: Military airstrip
Military user: US First Army ‘XIX’ Corps
3rd Armoured Division Artillery
54th Armoured Field Artillery Battalion
Location: ?
Period of operation: 1944/5 only?
NOTES: It appears that just two Piper L-4 Grasshoppers were based here.
The map simply shows the location of the town. If anybody can place the location more precisely I would much appreciate the information.

Reply from Dick Flute:
Hi Robin, I have been researching this general subject for at least twenty years and it would of course be a task equal to creating the web-site to list where exactly I have found every source of information. The web is often useful but a very poor substitute for books, back-issues of newspapers and magazines - plus of course various archives. This said, I suspect I came across this particular info in 'Lightplanes at War' by Ken Wakefield. Hope this helps. Best regards, Dick

Flights from 21 shillings – Admission 8d Southfield Farm – 51 13 22”N 002 18 40”W – Lies, to the west, immediately against the Wilts Somerset & Weymouth. I assume the field to the east over the rail bridge was the one that was used.
