Fyfield (GA)
FYFIELD (GA): Private airstrip
Note: This airstrip has been listed as FYFIELD (GA) to differentiate it from the WW1 aerodrome.
Note: All four of these pictures were obtained from Google Earth ©
Location: Just E of the B184, just NE of Fyfield village, roughly 3nm NNE of Chipping Ongar
Period of operation: Possibly from the 1960s?
Note: I appears that this airstrip may well have had periods when it was not in use.
Runway: 2000: 03/21 510 grass
NOTES: I can take no credit for finding this airstrip, it was kindly pointed out by Mr Trevor Sexton.
I had mistakenly thought that the WW1 FYFIELD aerodrome might have been used later. Under that entry, in a 'Comment' I was told that in 1967/8 two aircraft were regular visitors to LUTON airport from Fyfield. The Cessna 310 G-ARIG and the Piper PA-22 Colt 108 G-ARJE.
Would it be safe to assume that the 'Fyfield' location they used was the same as this entry? If anybody can kindly offer advice, this will be much appreciated.
In March 2023 I was kindly contacted by Mr Graham Frost, a great friend of this 'Guide'. He tells us that Smith's (Harlow) Ltd had the Miles M.38 Messenger 2A, G-AISL, based here. According to records this was from 25.01.61 until 26.03.65. The Cessna 310B, G-ARIG, (ex N5378A), was also registered to Smith's (Harlow) Ltd but over two periods - 01.12.64 to 21.10.65, then 11.11.66 until 30.09.70.
The Piper PA-22 Colt 108, G-ARJE, was registered to White Contracting Ltd at Fyfield Hall from 10.09.65 until 04.03.68. Graham also mentions that on a visit in 1969 the Piper PA-18 Super Cub 150, G-ARAM. Presumably just visiting as it was registered to Mr Norman H Jones from 22.09.60 until 19.09.75, with an address in Surrey. Graham also mentions that the hangar was empty on that visit, but, on another visit in the mid 1980s the only aircraft to be seen was a N-reg PA-28 Cherokee, once flown by the Lakenheath Aero Club. .
