Gainsborough

GAINSBOROUGH: Military Landing Ground

Military users: RFC/RAF  (Royal Flying Corps / Royal Air Force)    Night Landing Ground

33 [Home Defence] Sqdn  1916 to 1918   (Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2 and F.E.2 types)
Note:   In 1918 33 Squadron were equipped with Bristol F2 Fighters and later Avro 504 night fighters so it seems quite possible that they might have been seen here.

192 Sqdn [Night Training] were formed here flying Royal Aircraft Factory FE.2bs & FE.2ds

Training Squadron Station 1917

Location: Just W of the River Trent over which is Gainsborough town, which is of course in LINCOLNSHIRE

Period of operation: 1916 to 1918

Site area: 30 acres

NOTES: Mick Davis of Cross & Cockade whose help to this 'Guide' for WW1 UK flying sites has been absolutely invaluable poses the question; “Is it possible that Marshall & Sons of Gainsborough used this site for testing their Bristol designed types?”
