Garnswllt
GARNSWLLT: Temporary Landing Ground, later Temporary Aerodrome
Location: Just NW of Garnswllt village, about 1.5nm SSW of Ammanford town centre
Period of operation: 1913 initially and later in the early 1930s
Note: These maps and pictures have been kindly provided by Mike Holder, a great friend of this 'Guide'.
NOTES: It appears that this field was first used by Mr Prosser in 1913, 30th to the 31st October. See the listing 'Brecon District flying sites 1913' for more information regarding his activites in this region.
The information about air shows in the early 1930s comes from the article by Ioan M Richard called Sky High Above Mawr which Ioan kindly sent me in 2021.
"Air Shows in Garnswllt"
"Many residents today talk of handed down very recent accounts of Air Shows being held at the large flat field next to Afon Llwchwr called Ynys Fawr part of Ynystawelog Farm, Garnswllt, in the early 1930s. Seemingly crowds would gather to watch aerial acrobats, (My note - aerobatics), of daring pilots in light aircraft take off and land in the field. Those with enough courage and enough money would be taken up for an aerial circuit of the Ammanford area."
Mike Holder has kindly added these notes: "Afon is the Welsh for river and Ynys Fawr is Welsh for a large island. Basically the flying field is surrounded by water with the river on the west side, a small tributary following the railway from the Ynys-towlog Farm southwards down east of the flying field. Another tributary cuts to the NW just to the north."
What seems very certain is that Sir Alan Cobham's National Aviation Day No.2 tour displayed in Ammanford on the 7th September 1933, and that would have made a major impact in this area. We have yet to find who else might have operated here. As always, any advice will be most welcome. And of course, we presume they used this location?
