Gilling

GILLING: Military Landing Ground

Aerial view in 2018
Aerial view in 2018

Note. This picture was obtained from Google Earth © , but as so often I have to thank the Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust for pinpointing the exact location.

Military users: RFC/RAF  (Royal Flying Corps / Royal Air Force)

33 [Home Defence] Sqdn  (Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2 and F.E.2. Bristol F.2B Fighters in 1918, later Avro 504)

76 [Home Defence] Sqdn  (Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2 & B.E.12. Later Bristol F.2B Fighters in 1918)

Location: S of Gilling, (now apparently known as Gilling East), which is on the B1363, about 5nm S of Helmsley, 15nm N of York

Period of operation: 1916 to 1919

Site area: 28 acres     210 x 393

NOTES: This site was used as a DLG and NLG. 28 acres seems pretty tight for a Day Landing Ground let alone a Night Landing Ground doesn’t it?

In compiling and researching this 'Guide' I can only rely, by and large, on information readily available. This said, without taking too much effort, I was surprised to see that 33 Squadron appear to have been based in LINCOLNSHIRE. But of course the RAF have always arranged 'detachments' far and wide. Did this apply to the Royal Flying Corps Home Defence squadrons?
