Location: SW of Southey Green village, W of A1017, 1.5nm SW of Halstead
Period of operation: 1943 to 1945
Runways: 13/31 1829x46 hard 01/19 1280x46 hard
08/26 1280x46 hard
NOTES: Used in March 1945 by 38 Group for the Rhine crossing attacks.
After WW2 a site for Horsa glider disposal. Presumably they set fire to them? This, I believe, was the preferred method.

It appears that the Cessna 172N Skyhawk, G-BOUE, (ex N6535F), was based here from August 1988 until July 1989.

This comment was written on: 2019-08-29 19:48:30Hello. My dad took part in the Rhine crossing attacks, called "Operation Varsity". He was in the 1st Battalion The Royal Ulster Rifles, 6th Airborne Division. He took off in a Horse Glider on 24th March 1945, some of which, left from Gosfield Airfield. I wondered if you have records to confirm that my dad's battalion left from here, or an alternative airfield such as Birch. Thank you, Steve.
