Great Barr

Note: This map only gives the position of Great Barr within the UK. If anybody can kindly offer advice on a more exact location for this site, (or sites?), this will be much appreciated.

GREAT BARR: Military Landing Ground

Military user: RFC (Royal Flying Corps)

38 [Home Defence] Sqdn     (Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2c, and possibly, the Royal Aircraft Factory F.E.2b?)

Location: Roughly N of junction 7 on the M6, about 6nm NNW of Birmingham city centre

Period of operation: 1916

NOTES: It appears this was a Night Landing Ground from April to December 1916 and in those days Great Barr was of course located in STAFFORDSHIRE.

It appears that 38 Squadron were formed at CASTLE BROMWICH in July 1916 flying the B.E.2c. In September 1916 they were re-equipped with the F.E.2b before, it seems, then moving their HQ to MELTON MOWBRAY in LEICESTERSHIRE

GREAT BARR: Temporary aerodrome?

NOTES: On the 2nd August 1933 Sir Alan Cobham’s N.1 Tour displayed at Great Barr. Might they have used the WW1 Landing Ground listed above perhaps?
