NOTES: This 'Yorkshire Air Race', also nicknamed the "War of the Roses" due to the Blackburn monoplane being built in Yorkshire whereas the Avro 504 biplane was built in Lancashire, was basically a race between the two basic design concepts - monoplane versus biplane. Which was fastest? It took, I suppose, around at least twenty years or so to sort that question out, the monoplane being of course the clear winner.
In between it was very much in doubt. So many design factors had to be resolved. Basically the age old three problems, engine power, propeller design and aerodynamic drag from the wings. Plus of course, the weight of the airframe, the drag factors of the fuselage, undercarriage etc, etc, etc. I think it is rather interesting that in this race, the result was far from being conclusive?
