Green Park

Note: This map does of course show only an estimation of where this ascent actually took place.

GREEN PARK: Balloon ascent venue

Operated by: Charles Green

Location: Apparently in Green Park, fairly close to St James's Palace

Period of operation:  19th July 1821

NOTES:
According to Richard Holmes, in his excellent book Falling Upwards, this was the first ascent Charles Green made using coal gas as the lifting agent.  It seems that the Piccadilly Mains supply of coal gas had been recently installed, and, it seems that Charles Green, already a well known aeronaut, was very keen to find a far less expensive 'lifting agent' than hydrogen.

Also, it appears that this ascent was part of the public celebrations for the coronation of George IV. As Mr Holmes points out, as this site was not a popular site for public entertainment, perhaps a degree of Royal patronage was involved?
