Greencastle
Note: This map is only my idea (in 2016) as to where this airfield may have been situated. It really is quite astonishing that no information I can find regarding this site seems to agree as to where it actually was. Later in 2018 I became much more confident.
GREENCASTLE: Military aerodrome
Note: This picture (2017) was obtained from Google Earth ©
It is quite unusual for a WW2 airfield, especially with hard runways, to disappear without trace, but this seems to be the case here. However, if you look closely, to the north and west of the lake, there is evidence of dispersal areas.
Military users: USSTAFE Air Service Command Air Depot
Location: 2nm SW of Kinkeel it seems, but I very much doubt it.
Period of operation: 1942 to 1945
Runways: 08/26 1829x46 hard 03/21 1280x46 hard
14/32 1280x46 hard
NOTES: I had certainly never heard of GREENCASTLE before starting this project many years ago, and yet it must have been a truly remarkable aerodrome during WW2 and an aircraft spotters paradise.
They had 30 ‘Loop’ and 100 ‘Y’ type hardstandings, at least double the amount of any other aerodrome I’ve discovered. I’m assuming this means, (if they were all filled up of course), a minimum of 230 aircraft could be seen here and out in the open!
In 1944 some 2512 USAAF personnel were stationed here, at least at one point, so it was obviously a major logistic undertaking in it’s time.
