Grove Park

Note: This map only shows the position of Grove Park within the UK. Attempts to pin down the location of the ELG have failed so far, and any advice will be most welcome.

GROVE PARK: Military Landing Ground later temporary (?) civil aerodrome

Military users: RFC/RAF   (Royal Flying Corps / Royal Air Force)

Note: An ELG (Emergency Landing Ground) for 39  & 78 (Home Defence) Sqdns, both of which is seems were based at SUTTON'S FARM in ESSEX by 1917.

It appears that no aircraft were based here, but two sheds were erected to store aviation fuel and provide shelter for three aircraftsmen. It is reported that it was often used by trainee pilots for some circuit practice who might have arrived from a number of different aerodromes. The types seen here were Bristol F2B Fighters, Royal Aircraft Factory R.E.8s and Sopwith Camels. Plus on one occassion a Royal Aircraft Factory F.E.2b.

Civil user: Surrey Flying Services

Location: S of the A20, W of A208, about 2nm N of Bromley town centre

Period of operation: WW1: 1917 to 1919          Civil: 1925 only?

Site area: WW1: 51 acres    411 x 457

NOTES: Picture found of an AVRO 504K captioned, “Joy-riding at Grove Park, August 1925"
