Hamworthy - Royal Marines

ROYAL NAVY MARINES BASE (POOLE)  Helicopter landing area
(Aka ROYAL MARINES HAMWORTHY CAMP)

Aerial view

Note: This picture was obtained from Google Earth ©

Presumably the large extended 'T' acts as both a helipad, (on the 'cross-bar'), and/or if more than one helicopter is being used, a guide into the designated landing area.

Location: Rockley Park, S of the B3068 and part of Hamworthy, W of Poole town centre.

NOTES:  Established in 1942 this site has been used by the Royal Marines and latterly the SBS (Special Boat Service) using helicopters for many years. Types as large as Chinooks have been seen and it appears that they have been used, for example, to drop SBS personnel into the sea at Lulworth Cove, when they then practise an 'assault' up the cliffs.
