Handsworth
Note: Some time ago I made this comment: "This map only gives a rough idea of where this site was located, within the UK. If anybody can kindly provide a more exact position, this advice will be most welcome." (See below)
HANDSWORTH: Gliding site
Note: Both of these pictures were obtained from Google Earth ©
Operated by: The Midlands Gliding Club
Location: Just ESE of junction 1 on the M5, about 3.5nm NW of Birmingham city centre, roughly 4nm SSE of Walsall town centre
Period of operation: 1930s
NOTES: It appears they started flying on the 26th December 1934 using a Prufling plus a privately owned Falcon and by May 1935 had forty-nine members.
In October 2021 I was kindly contacted by Mr Christopher Warr who tells us that his father, aged 92, remembers it well. As a lad in WW2 he used to play on the airfield, then disused, although there were still aircraft in the hangar. The airfield was located on what is now Handsworth Golf Club. (Pictures now added)
