Harlescott Flying Ground

Note: This map only gives a rough position for this location. As is so often the case today, the area has since been overtaken by suburban sprawl. Oddly perhaps, I can not find much information about the site or the Shropshire Aero Club, as it was in those days. Any advice and information will be much appreciated.

HARLESCOTT FLYING GROUND: Civil airfield

Operated by: Shropshire Aero Club

Location: In/near Harlescott on the A49, roughly 2.5nm NE of Shrewsbury town centre

Period of operation: 1930s only?

NOTES: Possibly the Harlescott venue, (31st August 1932), for Alan Cobham’s National Aviation Day UK Display Tour?

Another report says this site was only operating from 1934 to1938 with minimal if any facilities so could it be that the arrival of Cobham’s tour in1932 gave rise to the idea the site could be used later on?

This does of course beg the question of what aircraft were being used by the Shropshire Aero Club? It is said though, that this Shropshire Aero Club bears no direct relationship to the present day Shropshire Aero Club based at SLEAP.
