Hatherley

HATHERLEY: Civil Landing Ground

Operated by: Westgate Motor House, 211 Westgate Street, Gloucester

Location: “3.5m NE Gloucester, imm NE corner B4063 and road to Twigworth, N of STAVERTON Airport”

Period of operation: 1930s only?

Runway(s): Max landing run:    457   grass

NOTES: Original info source ‘AA Landing Grounds’ publication, 1930s.

It needs to be borne in mind that STAVERTON (GLOUCESTER AIRPORT) was nothing like the size it is today, and quite possibly only for military use?

One of the great aspects of trying to produce a ‘Guide’ such as this over many years is that in some respects becoming a detective arises. Building up an overall picture from many small clues provided from a wide variety of sources. Obviously a large amount of guesswork is often needed but this Landing Ground stands out, especially as the Landing Ground appears to have been operated by a concern not specifically involved in aviation matters. But, possibly, the owner/manager of Westgate Motor House having considerable interest in aviation. And, quite possibly perhaps, also being a pilot and aircraft owner?

HATHERLEY was an AA (Automobile Association) approved Landing Ground but really quite unusual in claiming to have fuel, transport (typically a taxi service) and a telephone available at the Landing Ground. A hangar on site was listed in 1933 but it is not recorded if this could be used by visitors.
