Hawkwell

Note:  This map only gives the position of Hawkwell village within the UK. If anybody can kindly offer advice as to the location of this airstrip, this will be most welcome.

HAWKWELL: Private airstrip

Operated by: Mr F E Buckland

Location: Hawkwell village is on the B1013 roughly 5nm NW of Southend town centre

Period of operation: 1930s

NOTES: It appears that Mr Buckland often kept his Avro Avian III on a private airstrip here and at other times after September 1935 based it at the newly opened SOUTHEND MUNICIPAL AIRPORT where other privately owned types were based including Mrs Wilberforce’s Hornet Moth, Mr Roper Brown’s vintage Avro 543 Baby and later Klemm L.25, and a Hawker Tomtit owned and flown by the miller Mr H D Rankin.
