A MICHAEL T HOLDER GALLERY
In 2023, Mike Holder, a great friend of this 'Guide', discovered this event and kindly looked into what information could be found. We do not know exactly where the venue was, but can make a reasonable guess. Does anybody know these days?
The Notice was published in the Manchester Evening News on the 16th August 1920.
The article was published in The Aeroplane on the 10th November 1920. The area view is from my Google Earth © derived database.
NOTES: After WW1 this country had a large number of people that had been involved in aviation during the war, very keen to continue being involved. And, despite the official policy being to destroy as many war surplus aircraft as possible, many survived to become available for civil use, mainly for joy-riding and aerial displays. The most popular type for such duties was the Avro 504, mostly the 504K and 504N versions.
Without much doubt these being operated by the Manchester Aviation Company? The Avro company, whose main factory was in Manchester, also set up a major joy-riding operation, operating from many locations around the UK. But, also made a pretty lucrative sideline offering to convert the Avro 504 types into a three seater. These soon became very popular for operators offering joy-rides, and were used for such humble duties right up until WW2.
