Headley Court

Note: This map only gives the position of Headley Court within the UK. If anybody can kindly provide a more exact location for the actual flying site used, this advice will be most welcome.

HEADLEY COURT: Temporary aerodrome

Operated by: Alan Cobham’s 1933 No.1 UK tour

Location: 3nm ESE of Leatherhead

Period of operation: 28th April 1933

NOTES:  I think it is worth pointing out, as I have done elsewhere in the 'Guide', that the sites used by the 'Flying Circus' operators were, even if only used once and for just one day, officially licensed aerodromes. In the early days a couple of men from the Ministry would arrive in a car and make a thorough survey of the site.

Quite often this survey would result in various limitations being imposed, including performance limitations on some of the aircraft. Later on the more respected and experienced operators were allowed to become self licensing, but, nevertheless, the venue would still be classified as a licensed aerodrome.

It is perhaps ironic that the most popular and prolific operator, Alan Cobham (later Sir Alan of course) detested the term 'Flying Circus' - and yet this is the term that has stuck.
