Heaton Chapel

HEATON CHAPEL: Company airfield

Note:  This picture was obtained from Google Earth ©

The open area to the west of the factory may well have been the airfield?

Operated by: Crossley Motors Ltd

Location: Crossley Road, Heaton Chapel, roughly 3nm NW of Stockport town centre

Period of operation:  Probably 1917 to 1918

NOTES: In October 1917 Crossley Motors were appointed to run No.2 National Aircraft Factory in Heaton Chapel producing DH.9 and DH.10 bombers. Some adjacent parkland was requisitioned as an airfield or aerodrome to test fly these aircraft. It would seem that in the event very few Crossley built aircraft actually flew from here, most being transported, presumably by road, to No.2 (Northern) Aircraft Repair Depot at COAL ASTON in YORKSHIRE.
