Hells Mouth

Note: This map only shows a rough approximation of where this RLG was located. Oddly, little seems known about the exact location. If anybody can kindly offer advice on this it will be most welcome.

HELL’S MOUTH: Military Relief Landing Ground

9 (Observers) AFU  (Advanced Flying Unit)
Note: But almost certainly used by others?

Location: HELL’S MOUTH is a bay at the western end and southern side of the Lleyn Peninsula roughly 7 to 8nm SW of Pwllheli. HELL’S MOUTH RLG was the Range RLG and later ELG (Emergency Landing Ground) for RAF PENRHOS.

Period of operation:  1937 to 1945

NOTES: This RLG (later ELG) was, it appears, mainly associated with the gunnery ranges in the area. The main RAF Station being PENRHOS. According to Wikipedia the aircraft types associated with this site were Bristol Blenheims and Armstrong Whitworth Whitleys. Although, apparently, a Vickers Wellington made a semi-forced landing here after an engine failure.
