HERON QUAYS: Twice-off landing site

NOTES: It appears that on the 27th June 1982 a Brymon Airways Dash 7 regional airliner, flown by Captain Harry Gee, landed on HERON QUAYS, an area SE of Middle Dock and north of South Dock, close to the present day Canary Wharf commercial and financial centre in London’s Docklands. A rough and ready E/W runway of about 1000 metres had been prepared. The project was aimed to prove the viability of an airport situated close to the business centre of London.

Another test flight by Brymon Airways, also with a Dash 7 flown by Captain Harry Gee, took place the following year on the 30th June 1983; as part of a public enquiry. The case was won and in 1987 LONDON CITY airport opened, about 3nm E of HERON QUAYS, the first arrival being by Brymon Airways who then conducted the first commercial flight, to PLYMOUTH. Presumably using a Dash 7 (?) on the 26th October 1987.
