Hickling Broad

HICKLING BROAD: Seaplane operating area

Location: W of the A149, roughly 14nm NE of Norwich city centre

NOTES: Since WW2 the inland water sites in England available for use by seaplanes - floatplanes and amphibians for example, let alone flying boats such as the Catalina - have been very limited. Unlike Scotland where nearly all Lochs can be freely used.

One has to wonder what exactly the people owning or operating lakes and large rivers in England fear? Indeed, when flying in a floatplane in and around Scotland, and landing at a site with habitation, the response appears very enthusiastic - "Please come again."

See TOP FARM for my account of flying a photographic sortie involving HICKLING BROAD. As far as I am aware, since WW2 the only sites in England that have been available are, or were, just BEWL WATER and SCOTNEY COURT which are both in KENT. This said I recently discovered that FRITTON LAKE in NORFOLK can now be used.
