Hinksey Hill
HINKSEY HILL: Private airstrip
Note: The 2019 picture appears to show the airstrip being re-laid.
Note: The first five pictures were obtained from Google Earth ©. The area view is from my Google Earth © derived database.
Location: Just W of the A34, about 1.75nm SSW of Oxford city centre
Period of operation: Unknown? No obvious signs in 2014. Still operating in 2023
Runway: 2018 = 07/25 1000 grass 2020 = 06/24 1100 grass
NOTES: We have Mr Graham Frost, a great friend of this 'Guide', to thank for pointing out this most unusual location. Fortunately new airstrips keep appearing. even today (2023) in these somewhat straightened times for many. This example is exceptional in two main respects. Firstly, as the 2017 picture shows, the runway had a pronounced 'bend' in the middle. Not ideal of course, but hardly a problem for most pilots of even moderate flying experience.
Secondly, having a new grass runway of 1,100 metres, is today most unusual. As a general rule this indicates that serious twins are expected to visit? But, having this length of runway available does have considerable safety benefits for lighter types. Not least for having a serious engine problem, including failure, on the take-off.
If anybody can kindly offer advice and information, this will be most welcome. Pictures are always appreciated.
