Hinstock
HINSTOCK: Military aerodrome (HMS GODWIT)
Originally known as No.21 SLG OLLERTON
Military users: RN Instrument Flying Training
RAF: 21 SLG (Satellite Landing Ground)
Location: NNE of Ollerton & NNW of Childs Ercall, 4nm SW of Market Drayton
Period of operation: 1941 to 1947
Runway: Steel matting 03/21 1280x46 grass
NOTES: It appears that 27 MU SHAWBURY stored Magisters, Masters and Battles here before the site was handed over to the RNAS and this was 21 SLG. There is also proof that 11 SFTS first used this airfield, then 29 MU at HIGH ERCALL moved in, (1941), followed by 27 MU based at SHAWBURY in mid 1942?
It is prudent to regard much of the records kept by the RAF, in WW2 especially, with a healthy degree of sceptiscm. Some aviation historians make much of these records but I’ve talked to a couple of the people who made these records. Sometimes they are pure fiction, made up on the spot after being ordered to fill in various books recording various operational aspects - having just walked onto the Station and reporting for duty!
This might well come as a bit of a shock, even to some aviation historians - but when fighting a war nearly all the people involved regarded keeping paper records, if not as being a total waste of effort and time, certainly a low priority.
