Hirta
HIRTA: Helipad (Aka St Kilda)
Note: The second picture was found on the internet and the copyright is: The Carlisle Kid, geograph. org.uk/p/3483697.
Location: In Village Bay on Hirta island
NOTES: News of this helipad, in November 2017, was quite a surprise as I had no idea it existed. Mike Charlton very kindly sent me a picture of the 'terminal which he took whilst on holiday'. Mike has an amazing collection of postcards which he has been allowing me to use, to great effect, in illustrating this 'Guide'. See, www.aviationpostcard.co.uk
HIrta is the main island of the St Kilda archipeligo, the remotest islands in the UK, out in the Atlantic some 40 miles west of Benbecula and uninhabited since 1930. It is included under HIGHLAND & ISLANDS simply because I have to enter a 'County' to make a listing.
From what I can see it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, administered jointly by the National Trust for Scotland, Scottish Natural Heritage and the MoD.
The buildings in use today, are I think, used for primarily for the use of visitors. Some tourists of course, but also for those engaged in research; archaeology and natural history.
