Hog Hill

Note: This map shows the position of Hog Hill within the UK. See note below - THE MAP.

HOG HILL:   Gliding site

Operated by:  Essex Gliding Club

Location:  Nr Hainult

Period of operation: Possibly from around May to September 1930?

NOTES:  Once again I have Alan Simpson to thank for this information. "The Essex Gliding Club began life as the Chingford & District Gliding Club, but in May 1930, assumed its new name." The Club had grand plans for an Air Pageant to be held at FAIRLOP aerodrome, but these plans failed to materialise.

THE MAP
It needs to be borne in mind that in those days this site was in open country, although the newly built suburbs were quickly encroaching, especially after the Central Line underground reached Hainault.

Also, glider 'flights' in those days were basically short hops, a long 'flight' barely exceeding twenty seconds in duration - so, not much of a hill was required. But, nevertheless, the activity was highly regarded and quite popular.

Mr Simpson also found this information from Flight, 7 November 1930.
                              'THE ESSEX GLIDING CLUB'
'This club, which was inaugurated in May, has put in some good training work at its present ground at Havering Park Farm, Havering-Atte-Bower, and previously at Hog's Hill, Hainult.' See seperate entry for HAVERING PARK FARM.
