HOLLINWELL GOLF CLUB: Forced landing site
Note: This picture (2001) was obtained from Google Earth ©
Would it be right to assume the trees were lower in 1947?
Location: E of the A611, S of the B6020 and roughly 4nm NNW of Hucknall town centre
Period of operation: Once in 1947
NOTES: In February 2019 I was kindly contacted by Nick Molyneaux regarding my PAPPLEWICK MOOR listing. In passing he mentioned the Lancaster NG465 making a forced landing here with engine problems. On the 14th or 17th fairway he thought? Probably piloted by Rolls-Royce's Chief Test Pilot Harvey Heyworth NG465 had been modified for air-testing the new Rolls-Royce Dart turbo-prop engine that was fitted in the nose. This being based at nearby HUCKNALL.
I seem to recall reading something about these air-tests many, many years ago, and unless mistaken two of the Merlins, (possibly all four at times?), would be shut down to put the Dart through its paces. Perhaps two or more failed to restart hence the forced landing.
There are many golf courses listed in this 'Guide' as deliberate flying sites, and as a rule I do not include forced landing sites in this 'Guide' - there are thousands and thousands of them. But a Lancaster on a golf course must be worth a mention and possibly a unique occurrence?
