A Guide to the history of British flying sites within the United Kingdom

Hollinwood

Note: This map only gives the position of Hollinwood within the UK. Despite Ferranti being a huge company in the UK, every attempt to find an exact location for their HQ in the 1970s has failed. Masses of information available of course, but so often typically in my quest to locate a site - nothing. Any advice will be most welcome.

HOLLINWOOD: Private helipad

Location: SSW of Oldham probably S of the A627

NOTES: In the mid 1970s private company helipads were still something of a novelty but it appears the huge Ferranti Company factory in Hollingwood had a small subsidiary helicopter concern called Ferranti Helicopters Ltd based here operating two helicopters; Agusta-Bell 206A JetRanger G-AVSN and the Agusta-Bell 206B JetRanger G-AWJW. On the other hand, the Westland S51 Widgeon Srs.2, G-APVD, was registered to Ferranti Ltd at HOLLINWOOD from 10.06.63 until 01.03.72.

Typically the records available don't quite coincide. C-AVSN was registered to Ferranti on the 1st August 1967 until the 21st September 1970. It was then registered to Ferranti Helicopters from the 8th October 1970 until the 24th August 1981. But, another respected source says it was destroyed colliding with G-ANDE at BIGGIN HILL on the 15th May 1977.

Oddly perhaps, G-AWJW was only registered to Ferranti, (not Ferranti Helicopters), from the 22nd of May 1968 until the 8th October 1970. It then went to British Caledonian Helicopters at SHOREHAM (SUSSEX).
