Horton Farm

HORTON FARM:   Gliding site 1930

Note:  In a list of "Where Gliding Can Be Seen" published in 1930, (kindly sent to me by Mr Graham Frost), the location is given as "Horton Farm, Small-Dole, near Steyning."

The local view was obtained from Google Earth ©. The local area view is from my Google Earth © derived database.

Operated by:  Sailplane Club of T.M.A.C.

Location: Unknown as such. Small Dole is on the A2037, and my estimation of the gliding site is about 1.75nm E of Steyning and roughly 3.5nm NNE of the centre of SHOREHAM aerodrome/airport.

NOTES:  Efforts are made to try and locate various sites from the past, and it ain't always easy, bugger it. Attempts to locate Horton Farm failed, but, Horton Farmhouse just W of the A2037 is a Grade II listed building, with an address in Upper Beeding. My reason for thinking it was probably here, on the east side of the A2037, is simply that a natural bowl on the South Downs, relatively shielded and, on warm days especially probably with a nice on-shore southerly breeze would have suited their purposes?

If anybody can kindly offer advice and information, this will be much appreciated.

Later on Graham Frost found and kindly sent me this local map which confirms the location of Horton Farm.
