HOYLAKE BEACH: Temporary landing area
This picture, from a postcard, was kindly sent by Mike Charlton who has an amazing collection: See; www.aviationpostcard.co.uk
The caption states that this aeroplane was departing from FRESHFIELD on the 29th November 1910 for HOYLAKE. Is it safe to assume that having departed from one beach airfield, they would have landed on the beach here?
Note: This picture was obtained from Google Earth ©
This region of the UK especially has been famous for using the beach as flying sites since before WW1. So nice to see that many pilots are keeping up this tradition.
Location: Probably between Hoylake and West Kirby? Hoylake Beach is on the north western end of the Wirral peninsular roughly 8nm west of Birkenhead town centre
Period of operation: 2000s only? (And 1910 of course)
NOTES: Initial info source AAIB report EW/G2009/09/12. It appears that HOYLAKE BEACH has often been used by microlight and ultralight aircraft in recent years.
