Hugh Town

HUGH TOWN: Temporary airstrip

NOTES: In mid August 1929 a DH Gipsy Moth piloted by Colonel the Master of Semphill landed on the golf course near Hugh Town on St Mary’s. Appearing to be the first ever visit to the Scilly Isles by a fixed wing aircraft. He had apparently taken off from a site on the Lizard in CORNWALL but does any record exist of where this was? Seven months later in February 1930 another Moth G-AALG, (owned by the Prince of Wales), brought the Secretary to the Duchy of Cornwall for a brief visit, presumably using the same landing site?

The location of HUGH TOWN on the 'Google' map is only intended to give a general idea of this location within the U.K. If anybody can provide a more exact location, this will be very welcome.
