Military user: 8 SLG (RAF)

Location: W of the B5305, roughly 4nm NW of Penrith town centre

Period of operation: June 1941 to August 1945

Runway:  Presumably, roughly,  15/33   970   grass?

NOTES: Operated by 22 MU SILLOTH

According to the Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust web-site on this SLG, the main types stored here were, in alphabtical order: Blackburn Bothas, Bristol Blenheims, Hawker Hurricanes, Lockheed Venturas and North American Mustangs.

It must be said that during the research for this 'Guide', especially regarding the position of little known and obscure military sites of both World Wars, the Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust web-site has been an absolute boon - a treasure really. In many cases before I discovered it, it often took ages to pin these sites down, whereas in more recent times this can be reduced to a few minutes as I attempt to translate these locations onto Google maps. Hopefully with reasonable accuracy.

They also mention that in October 2010 a Fly-In was arranged here to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Note: This picture was also obtained from Google Earth ©. Mr Graham Frost, a great friend of this 'Guide' has kindly informed us that a video of the event, made by Northern Aviators, is available for viewing on YouTube. Well worth a look too.

The field used is at the southern end of the WW2 SLG.
