Killingholme


 

KILLINGHOLME:   Seaplane and flying boat base and airfield


Operated by:  Royal Naval Air Service    (Briefly United States Navy) 

Location:  Today within Killingholme docks, roughly 6nm SE of Hull city centre and about 10nm NW of Grimsby town centre

Period of operation:  c.1914 until 1919

AERIAL VIEWS FROM 1930

The flying boat base and airfield had long since gone, but, just possibly, these pictures might show the first refinery on the south banks of the Humber estuary? I assume that one of the flying boat slipways, the one to the east, must have been a major advantage for shipping large components to the refinery.
