Kings Park
Note: This map only shows the position of Kings Park within the UK. If anybody can kindly offer advice regarding the exact location of the 'check-point', this will be much appreciated.
KINGS PARK: Temporary landing site/flying ground (Now known as HOLYROOD PARK)
Note: This picture is captioned as being of the French pilot Jules Charles Toussaint Védrines coming into land, at Edinburgh during the 'Great Race' flying a Deperdussin monoplane. So, I assume the picture was taken here?
Operated by: The Daily Mail for the ‘Circuit of Britain Air Race’
Location: Just SE of Edinburgh city centre, near Arthur’s Seat
Period of operation: July 1911
NOTES: Perhaps almost impossible to imagine today I suppose, that a few acres suitable for aircraft to land existed so close to Edinburgh city centre? This said, Arthur’s Seat would have been a magnificent navigation point - hard to miss.
It now appears that Védrines was the first pilot to exceed 100mph.
